“People die in front of our eyes every day. These are people who should have been saved,” said a volunteer with a group that offers cremations to the poor.
Shunty provides help through his social service organisation "Shahid Bhagat Singh Seva Dal (SBSSD) by facilitating transportation of coronavirus victims' bodies and also organises funerals when family members or relatives don't come forward to conduct the last rites.
Dr Jitender Singh Shunty, Padma Shri Awardee and President, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal said that he and his team cremated over 4,000 bodies during the pandemic.
Shunty gets an average of 500 phone calls asking for a range of services. But mostly, Shunty has been helping people in East Delhi cremate the dead.
Former BJP MLA set up Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal in 1996. It organises cremations for the poor & abandoned, and helped cremate 4,000 during second Covid wave.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal (SBSSD), a non-profit organisation working to ensure dignity in death, has lost one of its ambulance drivers to Covid-19. Aarif Khan, who succumbed to the virus on Saturday, has ferried over 200 Covid bodies for cremation.

Dr Jitender Singh Shunty, founder and the pillar of strength behind the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Foundation, has a long list of achievements under his name. Ex-MLA, social activist, founder of an NGO, holder of the world record of voluntarily donating blood 100 times (thus being titled -donor Singh), recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award from the government of India.
